It seems that local authority caterers are facing the same challenges all across the country. How do you introduce healthy menus while still being popular with the kids?
Many authorities have discovered that the introduction of healthy menus has led to more children abandoning school dinners to go and queue up at the chip shop or the burger van.
In our last news item we reported on schools who were taking a hard-stance policy on packed lunches. Now we have read reports of schools in Sunderland who are trying to combat the lure of junk food by locking kids in during the lunch break. Is this action too drastic? Admittedly, it has only been tried at one school in Sunderland so far. Other attempts to attract children back to healthy school dinners have included a week of free meals for all and a rewards system.
What are your suggestions? How far should we go in trying to get children to eat healthy food? How far is too far?
