Can my child have a free breakfast in school?
In 2005, the Welsh Assembly Government launched a Free Breakfast scheme in Wales offering primary school pupils a free, healthy breakfast every morning in their school.

Breakfast Clubs are currently running in 43 primary schools in Bridgend County Borough.  Please check the 'Latest News' page for the complete list of schools providing a Breakfast Club.  The Clubs serve cereal and toast every morning with fruit wedges and a choice of milk or fruit juice to drink.

For more information on the free breakfast scheme visit www.bridgend.gov.uk or the Welsh Assembly Government's website: http://wales.gov.uk/

Please contact your child's school to see if they are taking part in the free breakfast initiative.

My child is a vegetarian and has complained of the lack of choice available ...
Catering Services do not encourage pupils to become vegetarians as we believe in a healthy balanced diet for growing children. However we respect parents who wish their children to be vegetarians. There is at least one vegetarian option available on our menu everyday.

What are the Nutritional Standards for Welsh school lunches?
School lunches must contain at least one item from each of the following groups.

Fruit and vegetables in all forms.
Starch food such as potatoes, rice and pasta must be available daily.
Fat or oil (polyunsaturated or monounsaturated variety) should not be used in cooking procedures more than 2 times a week.
Meat, fish or alternative sources of protein must be available everyday.
Milk and dairy must be available daily.
We are currently waiting for the new standards for the Welsh Assembly Government. (We differ from the English Government)

How much is a school meal?
A 2 course meal costs £1.80.

Do you cater for special diets?
Yes, we can provide special menus for medical or religious reasons. A letter from your child's doctor or dietician is needed for medical diets. If you have any specific concerns, contact us via the contacts page.

My child is a fussy eater: I'm worried he/she won't eat anything.
The catering staff are extremely vigilant and will gently encourage pupils on their choice but will never force a child to eat. If a pupil is not settling into school lunch, our staff will have a discreet word with a teacher who will inform the parent/guardian.

Can my child try school meals for a little while?
Yes, the child may only wish to take the school dinner for a short while and this can be easily arranged. Contact the school secretary.

Why couldn't my child get the school meal he/she wanted near the end of the lunch service?
The school kitchens try to keep a choice of foods through to the end of service each day. However, it is not always possible to gauge accurately what each child will choose but there will always be a hot meal for every child at the end of service.

I think we might qualify for free school meals but don't know who to ask?
Please contact the school secretary who will be able to provide the appropriate forms and advise on this matter.

Are kitchens inspected regularly?
Yes- The following four inspections are undertaken annually
Internal Audit
Health & Safety Audit
Lunch service check
Environmental Health Officers
