Betws Primary are the first School in Bridgend to provide free healthy Breakfasts under the Welsh Assembly Government’s Initiative. During their first week after the Spring half term over 190 breakfasts were served. The healthy breakfast menu includes - a selection of cereal and milk, wholemeal toast and unsweetened fruit juices.
Ms Aston, the Headteacher says ‘We are thrilled with the new service and have seen many benefits already. For example pupils who travel from outside the catchment area are now able to come and socialise with other pupils before the school day.
Breakfast clubs are not a new initiative, but until now they have been subsidised by schools themselves, through grants from organisations including the National Lottery or by pupils paying. The aim of the initiative is to stem the practice of skipping breakfast, help improve concentration and health and raise the standards of learning and attainment by providing pupils with the opportunity to receive a free, healthy breakfast at school
