School children in Bridgend County Borough turned into mini chefs for Bridgend County Borough Council Catering Services’ “Design a Healthy School Meals” competition.
Pupils were asked to design a healthy, well balanced two course meal for one day, suitable for a school meal. The winning pupil was given a family ticket to Techniquest, while their school was given a state of the art salad bar.
Lily Harris from YGG Cwm Garw, Pontycymer was named winner with her nutritious meal of low fat sausage casserole with vegetable rice served with fresh vegetables and a dessert of fresh fruit smoothies.
Bryngarw House’s award winning chef Ramnikin Ramji was on hand, during the presentation, to show the children and staff how easy it is to prepare a fresh salad using their new salad bar and pupils were given the choice of sampling Lily’s winning meal or the fresh salad for lunch.
Norma Griffiths, Group Manager for Catering Services:
“It was a tough competition to judge. We received hundreds of entries form most schools in the borough, all offering a healthy meal and dessert. Congratulations to Lily and to YGG Cwm Garw who now get to enjoy the benefits of having a fresh salad prepared every day.”
