Pupils and staff at Deri Primary School stepped back in time this week to help celebrate the school’s 100th birthday. A special meal was prepared by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Catering Service using ingredients that were traditionally used at the turn of the last century to give pupils and staff a taste of life in 1904.
The children and teachers also assumed the personalities and clothing of the people that would have first attended the school. Many pupils remained in character throughout the day, even adopting names that were popular when the school first opened.
Ninety-five pupils attend Deri Primary School and their school meals are supplied by the council’s Catering Services.
Sally Franks, Head of Catering and Cleaning Services, said, ‘The staff and pupils at Deri Primary school got into the spirit of celebration, some even dressed up. We were delighted to be able to provide the catering on such a great occasion. We have been providing School Meals at Deri Primary for many years and encourage pupils to eat healthily with our veg of the week scheme and various other healthy eating initiatives.’
Catering Services provided two specially prepared meals during the celebration week. The first meal was made using ingredients that were traditional 100 years ago, while the second celebration meal was made using everyday ingredients of today. The pupils enjoyed it all.
