Pupils at primary schools in the Upper Rhymney Valley area have been taken part in a pilot healthy eating and fitness initiative.
The pupils from schools in the north of the county borough that chose a specially prepared healthy meal were given vouchers for a fun sports day in Heolddu and New Tredegar Leisure Centre.
The fun sports day gave pupils the chance to take part in Fit Kidz and Dragon Sport session free of charge.
The aim of the initiative is to educate pupils on the benefit of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. It is hoped that this or a similar initiative will be adopted in all schools in the area.
The scheme was part of the National School Meals week, which promotes healthy eating in schools across the UK and was developed by the council’s Catering and Leisure Services.
Cabinet member, Cllr David Hardacre, is supportive of this scheme, “The health and well being of our children is of paramount importance to the council. Any scheme that encourages children to improve their nutritional intake and lead a more active lifestyle is to be fully supported.”
