Locally Sourced Food
The council has started (8th November) a new scheme to buy food from local farmers to use initially in meals on wheels and staff restaurants. The scheme, which will later be rolled out to selected schools, will allow the council to improve the quality of its meals by using fresh and organic produce.
The scheme is a partnership between Procurement and Catering Services. Procurement Services have a SME development officer whose aim is to source products, to be used by Caerphilly Council, locally. This new scheme will support local business and hopes to encourage other local farmers to join.
Each year over 180,000 hot meals on wheels are delivered across the county borough providing recipients with tasty, nutritious meals. Customers will now be able to support their local farmers and sample fresh ingredients grown or reared locally.
Cabinet Member Cllr Gwyn Price is enthusiastic about the scheme, “ The council is committed to supporting local business by developing links with local suppliers and this new scheme will provide a real boost to the local economy”.
If you want to find out more about the scheme or are a local farmer who is keen to take part in the project please contact Kath Webb on 01443 873759.
