About Us
The Catering and Cleaning Service is the Council’s service. The Service provides school meals for 22,000 children each school day within 201 primary schools and Specialist Inclusive Learning Centres (SILC's) across the City. We also provide catering services within a number of high schools and Early Years Centres within Leeds.
Our Staff
We employ approximately 1300 staff within the Catering and Cleaning Service and despite the large number, we remain a very close and successful team.
Our staff are dedicated to the health and well being of the children they serve and, are committed to improving both the meals on offer and the general diet of the children.
We pride ourselves on the caring staff that we employ and their positive approach to change. The staff normally live locally to schools and they are always happy to take a moment to answer a question, or to encourage a child to try a new food, or to gently suggest they try a little bit of their vegetables even if they don’t eat them all.
Our staff are Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked to ensure their suitability for working with children.
Our Food
Our menu has been transformed within the last few years and we have moved very much “back to basics” with the choices we offer, with an emphasis on healthy options.
Where possible we cook fresh, seasonal food and increasingly more schools are getting the equipment to allow us to increase home cooked foods.
Although we do have budget constraints we never select a product that we plan to serve to your child on cost alone. Quality is very important to us. We never compromise quality for cost.
Free School Meals
Is your child entitled to a free school meal? Not sure? If you fit the criteria detailed below they probably are. School meals currently cost £1.85 for children in years 1-4 and £1.90 for years 5 and 6. This adds up to over £300 each year so it’s worth finding out if you are eligible.
Your children are entitled to Free School Meals if you receive:
- Income Support, or
- Job Seeker's Allowance (Income based), or
- Income Related Employment Support Allowance or
- Child Tax Credit, as long as you do not receive Working Tax Credit and you have an annual taxable income as assessed by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs which does not exceed £16,040.00.

Our Achievements
We recently achieved Customer Service Excellence (formerly known as Charter Mark) for our catering services which is a national standard for customer service excellence.
“In reaching the standard the organisation has committed to continuous improvement, putting their customers first and going the extra mile.”
