Manchester Schools go Meat-free
Date: 7/6/2010

Manchester schools go meat-free

Manchester Fayre, Manchester City Council’s school meals provider, is launching ‘Meat Free Mondays across all of its schools this month.

The step is part of Manchester City Council’s plan to reduce the city’s carbon emissions by cutting down on meat consumption in schools.

Statistics show that, shockingly, farmed animals produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the world’s entire transport system. So for one day each week vegetarian and fish dishes will replace traditional meat-based recipes in Manchester’s school canteens.

Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council’s executive member for finance and human resources said: “Our new policy will not only help the city council become more environmentally friendly, but will enable us to become more efficient in how we spend taxpayers’ money.”

Meat Free Monday is part of the city’s Climate Action Change, which aims to reduce Manchester’s carbon emissions by 41% over the next decade.

Other improvements will include awarding key contracts to companies with environmentally sound credentials.
