North West School Chef of the Year Anu Rajput, from St. John’s RC School, Chorlton, has been named the best school chef in the North West at the Local Catering Authority’s School Chef of the year regional final. LACA’s School Chef of the Year is the only dedicated culinary competition especially tailored for school caterers. The School Chef of the Year judging criteria are tough but the skills and standards demonstrated by Anu show how talented Manchester Fayre’s catering staff are, cooking healthy and delicious meals for children every school day. Anu prepared a dish of chicken shashlik, a recipe of skewered chicken with vegetables, followed by a fruits of the forest fool. The competition required contestants to cook an entire meal for four children with a budget of just £1.35 per head. Anu will go on to compete in the national final in May held in Birmingham. Anu Raiput said, “It feels fantastic to win, all the other competitors were very talented so it’s a real honour to come first. “I’m really looking forward to the final, it’s going to be incredibly exciting to compete for School Chef of the Year representing both St John’s RC School and Manchester.” Councillor Bernard Priest, executive member for finance and human resource, said, “It is brilliant to see Anu recognised for all of her hard work and for the commitment that she has shown with the competition. “Anu’s achievement reflects the skills and talent possessed by the Manchester Fayre staff. By preparing nutritious and creative dishes Manchester Fayre make a real difference to children’s eating habits, improving their diet and health.” “By providing school pupils with healthy meals and nutritional education we can improve children’s health, not only for the duration of their time in school but the rest of their lives.”
