Q. Who decides what is on the menu?
A. Our menus are created and developed through close liaison between area catering managers, our nutritionist, catering staff, head teachers and, of course, pupils.
Q. We eat healthily at home so I do want my child to eat a healthy school meal.
A. Our menus are carefully balanced to offer the food children like but is also of a high nutritional content and lower in saturated fats, sugar and salt. Our Fit for Life concept in primary schools provides pupils with a balanced diet based upon nutritional legislation. Children arriving at the counter are invited to select a choice from different food groups represented by different colours Green zone -vitamins and minerals, Orange zone -proteins, Yellow zone -carbohydrate. We have introduced branded healthier food products into secondary schools under the MO'FLAVA brand and these brands are easily identified and often linked to promotions and competitions to encourage the pupils to choose a balanced choice.
Q. Are salads and fresh fruit available?
A. Fresh fruit is available in all schools. Salads are also available and are more popular in the summer than in the winter months. It is important to note that we exceed the requirements of the nutritional legislation.
Q. Can we just try school meals to see if my child likes them?
A. In most schools the head teacher will allow their pupils to have a trial period at school meals, but this is really down to the schools own policy.
Q. What legislation applies to school meals?
A. All meals comply with the current legislation relating to nutritional requirements, namely the Education (Nutritional Standards for School Lunches) Regulations 2000.
Q. My child is a fussy eater and I am concerned that he/she won't eat any thing.
A. As you would expect we have a lot of experience feeding children and whilst we employ a little gentle persuasion, children are never made to eat anything they do not like.
Q. Can I ask to see the menus or ask to speak to the Catering Supervisor?
A. Yes you can. Talking directly to the Catering Supervisor will ensure that we receive positive feedback and areas for improvement can be easily highlighted.
Q. Does anyone check on what is being served?
A. All Manchester Fayre staff are trained in basic food hygiene and each school is supported by a Catering Manager and specialist support staff who carry out regular monitoring and spot checks.
