Why should I choose a school lunch for my child? |

Newport Catering works in partnership with nutrition experts from Gwent NHS Trust to ensure the school menu includes a range of healthy, nutritious meals. The food is sourced from reputable suppliers and where possible the meals are cooked on the school premises. Here are just some of the ways Newport Catering is making school meals healthier:
-
Steaming or oven-baking the majority of foods. The only fried food on the menu is chips and these are restricted to twice a week.
-
Using Omega-3 fortified fish products that have been coated in a non-fried crumb.
-
Offering a range of colourful steamed vegetables, including sweetcorn, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots.
-
Including fruit in the majority of our desserts, such as Apple & Blackberry Pie and Wholemeal Peach & Apricot Crumble.
-
Adding fibre to our recipes by using ingredients such as wholemeal flour, oats, beans, lentils and brown rice
As well as providing healthier options, we believe it is vital to work with the pupils, along with parents and guardians, to encourage the children to choose these healthier foods. Newport Catering carries out food tasting sessions and focus groups with pupils so that they can try new recipes and give opinions about what they like or dislike. By consulting with pupils about the menu, we hope this will make them feel more involved and encourage them to try the new foods when they are added to the menu.
The menu, which has been re-styled, provides information about the ‘Vital 5' gang who will assist the School Meal Service to market and raise awareness of nutrition and school meals within the Primary sector. This is part of the Marketing and Communications initiative that the School Meal Service is using to ensure children are presented information in an interesting way.
