Continuous Improvement to school menus

We have already introduced changes to school menus to promote healthy eating, nutritional balance and encourage children to take healthier options. In addition to this we have -

  • Had the menus nutritionally analysed by a new data base and carried out trials prior to implementation in schools.
  • Focused strongly on popular home cooked foods and limited the number of convenience style foods on to the menus.
  • Increased the vegetable and carbohydrate portions on the menu.
  • Increased the iron content in some of the dishes
  • Continue to carry out product testing on commodities to ensure that they are GM free and contain no prohibited additives.
  • Reduced  the amount of sugar and fat in the menus.
  • Only used fried products once a week.
  • Provided a wide range of fresh salad and vegetable items daily as well a seasonally selected fruit.
  • Ensured that wholemeal, white or brown bread is also available every day for all the children
