We have already introduced changes to school menus to promote healthy eating, nutritional balance and encourage children to take healthier options. In addition to this we have -
- Had the menus nutritionally analysed by a new data base and carried out trials prior to implementation in schools.
- Focused strongly on popular home cooked foods and limited the number of convenience style foods on to the menus.
- Increased the vegetable and carbohydrate portions on the menu.
- Increased the iron content in some of the dishes
- Continue to carry out product testing on commodities to ensure that they are GM free and contain no prohibited additives.
- Reduced the amount of sugar and fat in the menus.
- Only used fried products once a week.
- Provided a wide range of fresh salad and vegetable items daily as well a seasonally selected fruit.
- Ensured that wholemeal, white or brown bread is also available every day for all the children
