School meals get its marching orders
Councillor Peter Brown with Gavin and the cooks

North Yorkshire welcomes Gavin Wakeham as the new Training Manager for North Yorkshire County Caterers. Gavin has spent 24 years with the army ending his services as Catering Trainer for the Defence Food Services School in Aldershot.

Gavin's new brief will be to work with our cooks to develop their cooking and practical skills. The training will be ongoing starting in July resulting in an NVQ Level 2 Professional Cooking as well as City and Guilds providing healthier school meals certificate which includes nutrition, diet and food labelling.

At these workshops, Gavin is demonstrating our new healthier recipes which feature on the menu in September. The cooks who attended said they had learnt a lot. Tracey, our cook at Applegarth School, said "It is the first time I have trained away from my kitchen with colleagues from other kitchens and found the day very useful.  I picked up lots of tips and found it helpful speaking with cooks from other schools."

Gavin said "I found the day very useful and was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the cooks. I get a real buss from training and I am looking forward to the start of the training days in September".

The Councillor for Romanby and Broomfield Peter Brown attended one of the sessions he said: "I enjoyed the morning joining in the cooks training session I am full of praise for the way the training was carried out I learned a lot "
