Cyril saves the day

It was the last day of term and Cyril was walking home. He had a lot on his mind. He had taken a present to his teacher to say thank you. It was a tea towel that his Mum had made and then had used a needle and thread to write "Thank you to Mrs Thomas". It was wrapped up in beautiful, coloured paper. Cyril had wrapped it up the night before. He had a problem because he could not find the Sellotape. He needed it to make sure all the paper stayed in place. He finally found it under the bed. It had rolled there after the last time he used it.

Cyril was also thinking ahead to his holidays. He wasn't going abroad this summer but he was going to stay with his Auntie in Cleethorpes. Cyril loved his Auntie because she was always happy and made Cyril laugh. She was always telling him silly jokes like - "Why did the hedgehog cross the road, to see his flat mate," said Auntie. "Oh" said Cyril, "that is terrible I love hedgehogs".

Cyril crossed the road carefully, it wasn't a very busy road but he still had to make sure there was no traffic coming. Suddenly a car came round the corner. It was going far too fast and it was just as well that Cyril was not standing right on the kerb.

As Cyril got to the other side he saw some of his friends. They were all talking and laughing together. They must be having fun thought Cyril because they have got great big smiles on their faces. It must be because it is the start of the long school holidays. All that time thought Cyril, "what shall I do?" " I can have lots of fun in the forest playing games with my friends, exploring places I have not been before and then I can go into Nottingham and look round all the shops. Cyril had a birthday soon and so he wanted to come up with ideas. He had a Nintendo Wii and was thinking about a WiiFit. But Cyril wanted to try one and play on it before he asked for one.

Just then he saw Emma moved away from the group. She was showing off and didn't really know what was going on around her. Suddenly she fell backwards; it was as though someone had pushed her. She was heading between two cars and onto the main road.

Cyril moved quickly. He caught her by the arm just as she was about to go out into the road. It was just as well Cyril did because a few seconds later a great big lorry came thundering past.

Emma was really shocked. She could have been killed or very seriously hurt had it not been for Cyril. He had really saved the day. But Cyril was very cross because it was only last week that he had read the local paper where someone had rushed into the road, right in front of a car. It was very lucky that the car was only driving at 25 mph so it was able to brake and he was not badly hurt.

Cyril took Emma to one side. You must learn the Green Cross Code. My teacher gave me a copy last week.

This is what Cyril gave to Emma. Cyril says, "Make sure you read it, learn it and then use it every time you cross the road, as it could save your life".

THE GREEN CROSS CODE

Step 1 - Think about where you are going to cross, is there a bridge, zebra crossing or subway that could be safer. There might be a policeman, traffic warden or school crossing patrol that could help you

Step 2 - Stop at the kerb, make sure you can be seen at the kerb and your view is not obstructed by other vehicles. If you can see a car or lorry then they can see you. Make sure you don't get too close to the kerb. Don't try to cross when you have to walk through two parked cars

Step 3 - Look everywhere for traffic, it could suddenly come round the corner or pull out from the kerb quickly

Step 4 - If there are any cars, lorries or other vehicles on the road, stop by the kerb and wait for them to pass

Step 5 - When there is no traffic coming, walk across the road, listen and look out for any traffic while you cross the road
