The term local produce is taken to a new level at two of the city’s schools where fresh vegetables are actually grown, prepared and cooked on-site.
Dovecote Primary School and St Mary’s Hyson Green are the first two schools in the city to develop their own allotments. Vegetables are grown on the school site or allotment which enables the children to see them grow into the food they eat as part of their school meals.
This is an excellent way to educate children about where food comes from and all about the different fruit and vegetables that they can eat.
Sharon Curson, Catering Supervisor at Dovecote Primary School said: "The allotment has been a great success already and there is lots of interest from both children and teachers. It helps the children to understand where their food is coming from and the children are keen to give the school-grown vegetables a try."
