Robin Hood fever helps promote healthy eating
Date: 3/11/2006

Robin Hood fever will be riding through school dining halls over the next few months thanks to an exciting competition, which has been launched on www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham.

Children in Nottingham City can win the opportunity to take up archery in Sherwood Forest with one of Nottinghamshire’s County Coaches, Christine Gascoigne from KG Archery.

The competition prize includes a child’s starter kit with a bow, a case, arm guard, finger tab, arrows and quiver plus a lesson with Christine from KG Archery in Sherwood Forest - the home of Robin Hood.  Children must find the answers to a series of Robin Hood questions and answer a tie-breaker about why they would like to win this fantastic prize.

My School Lunch is a website aimed at children, parents and teachers and promotes healthy eating and school meals.  It includes a funfair of educational games so children can learn about food and healthy eating as they play.  There is information for parents including menus and the nutritional content of school meals plus downloadable lesson plans to help teachers in the classroom.

Jacquie Blake, School Catering Operations Manager, from Neighbourhood Services at Nottingham City Council said: “Interest in archery has increased dramatically over the last month because of the BBC TV series, Robin Hood.  With Nottingham being the home of Robin Hood and KG Archery being in Sherwood Forest this is a fantastic competition to encourage children to visit www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham where they can learn about healthy eating.  A new Robin Hood themed story has been added to Cyril’s online club to coincide with the launch of our new competition.”

Nottinghamshire coach, Christine Gascoigne helped two archers achieve Paralympics gold medals at Athens and Sydney.

Christine said, “At half term our shop was full of children wanting to try archery.  We have an indoor shooting range so people can try before they buy in safety.  Archery is a great sport as it gets children out in the fresh air and walking to and from the targets. I believe school meals are a vital part of the whole school day and it is great to be helping in this way.”

The competition runs until Monday 8th January 2007 and children have to register in the online club to enter.  The prize is suitable for children over the age of seven but children below this age could win the prize for an older brother or sister.  Cyril’s online club can be accessed at www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham/kids
