Meet the new faces of school meals in Nottingham City
The cutting of the ribon to launch the site

Pupils play on the new site

Date: 14/2/2007

Key Stage 2 pupils in Nottingham City will see some new faces at school lunchtimes when a new addition to www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham is launched next week (Wednesday 14th February).

Roxie and Billy are two new cartoon style characters that have been introduced to educate Key Stage 2 children about the benefits of eating healthy food and leading an active lifestyle.  The characters have their own mini-site at www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham/roxieandbilly.

On the Roxie and Billy site children can learn about the characters including how they met, what they like to eat and what sports they are interested in.  There is also regular news stories so children can find out what Roxie and Billy have been up to.  Roxie is 16 and enjoys surfing and snowboarding whilst 17 year old Billy competes in triathlons.  Both characters highlight the importance of eating regular healthy meals for them to succeed in their chosen sports and at school.

Children can complete the Roxie and Billy award by downloading the activity sheet from the award section.  They then have to go round the website using the clues given and collect all the pictures they need to complete the award.  It educates children about creatures and life under the sea.

To launch the site schools in the city can enter a competition to win one of three drama day experiences for Key Stage 2 pupils.  Pupils in the winning classes will have the opportunity to play a series of games related to healthy eating and create a play which can be performed to parents and the rest of the school about the importance of eating the right foods.

Jacquie Blake, School Catering Operations Manager, from Neighbourhood Services at Nottingham City Council said: “The new website has been introduced to educate our Key Stage 2 children about healthy eating through characters that they can relate to and aspire to be like.  The drama day provides schools with a fantastic opportunity to educate their pupils about healthy lifestyles in a fun, different and interactive way so we are encouraging all Primary Schools in the city to enter.”

A Sony Playstation and Eye Toy are also up for grabs on the website.  This is a great way for children to keep fit with friends and family as the energetic games keep children entertained for hours.

Chris Turner-Rowe, Headteacher at Rosslyn Park Primary School said: “I have seen the Roxie and Billy mini-site and am very impressed.  It is bright, colourful and full of fun interactive things that the children can play and do.  It will be a fantastic addition to the already popular Cyril and My School Lunch website which make school lunchtimes really fun and enjoyable for our Key Stage 1 children.”
