School meals under the spotlight in Nottingham City
Date: 18/6/2007

Schools in Nottingham City will be taking to the stage to learn about healthy eating and active lifestyles. Three schools have won a drama day as part of a competition run by Nottingham City School Catering team. This exciting competition was organised to launch the new Roxie and Billy website. Roxie and Billy are two new characters that were launched in February. The characters have their own mini-site on the website www.myschoollunch.co.uk/nottingham.

On the site children can learn about Roxie and Billy including how they met, what they like to eat and what sports they are interested in. There are also regular news stories so children can find out what they have been up to. Roxie is 16 and enjoys surfing and snowboarding whilst 17 year old Billy competes in triathlons. Both characters highlight the importance of eating regular healthy meals for them to succeed in their chosen sports and at school. To launch the site Headteachers in the city were asked to write a tie-breaker about why they would like to win the drama day for their school.

Many schools in the city entered the competition but the winners were Hogarth Primary School, Warren Primary School and Portland School. The drama days will take place next week (18th, 19th and 20th June). The aim of the drama day is to educate children about healthy eating and leading an active lifestyle in a fun environment away from the usual classroom situation. During the drama days children will learn more about a healthy lifestyle with Key Stage 1 children playing lots of educational games and Key Stage 2 practicing and performing a special play in a school assembly or to parents.

Jacquie Blake, School Catering Operations Manager, Neighbourhood Services at Nottingham City Council: "We wanted to do something different to launch Roxie and Billy and thought this was a great way of creating awareness of the site in Nottingham. We know that these drama days have been very successful in other areas of the country and that at the end of them children recognised the importance of eating healthy food at home and at school. I am sure that we will have a similar response in Nottingham. The schools are looking forward to their drama days as it is a fun and interactive way for kids to learn about something that is so important."
