From September 2008, the menus that Salford are currently using, comply with the Nutrient Based Government Guidelines 2008.
The main changes that you will see are:-
more fruit and vegetables
more protein
availability of water
bread will be available daily
less fried foods
The standards are designed so that a school lunch provides a third of the recommended daily intake.
Citywide uses a Saffron computer system, which analyses the nutritional contents of a meal and has:
provided extra nutritional training for staff
introduced a higher quality of oily fish
larger portion sizes of carbohydrates
introduction of wholemeal bread and a larger daily variety of salads
worked with suppliers to use enhanced products
The menus include some traditional favourite's i.e shepherds's pie, gammon and pineapple, homemade meat pie, pasta bolognaise, chicken casserole as well as some of the children's favourite's i.e roast dinner.
Citywide Services have sourced new products that are low in fat, low salt and reduced sugar (almost all of the food is oven baked) with recipes being adapted to include more fruit and vegetables, bread and chilled water will be available at all times.
The cost of a school meal is £1.70 a day.
