SOLIHULL CATERING SERVICES

Our primary catering service cook all meals on site for Solihull Borough's schools.  Menu cycles are put together centrally and are carefully planned taking into account the government nutritional guidelines.  The Unit Catering Manager, to take into account the taste of the children in their school, can adapt these menus.

A school lunch helps your child prepare for afternoon lessons.  Your child uses up a great deal of energy during a full school day.  They need to concentrate during lessons, let off steam at playtime and then recharge their “energy cells” for the afternoon.

I am sure you will appreciate that a good quality nourishing lunch can help recharge your child's battery.  This is why we have spent so much time on balancing the menus from a nutritional standpoint.

We do our utmost to supply, support and assist children with allergic conditions to enjoy safe substantial and balanced meals. We also provide a daily vegetarian choice.

Mrs Michele Orson
Bishop Wilson Church of England Primary School

An important lesson in life is learning to eat properly and where else to learn about this but at school lunchtimes?  We believe that a school lunch is an important part of a child’s school day.

At Bishop Wilson School, children are able to choose from an exciting range of foods that together form a healthy and balanced meal.  Research confirms that access to a balanced and nutritious meal improves a child’s ability to concentrate and get more out of their afternoon lessons.  The occasion itself is an opportunity for children to practice social skills and manners in preparation for later life.

As for the food itself, variety, nutrition and balance are the key words.  Pupils are offered fresh vegetables, fruit and salads as part of their daily choice.  Vegetarian options are provided as well as traditional foods but all options are freshly prepared to give our children a tasty but healthy mid-day meal.  For many children it’s a chance to try out new food and acquire new tastes.

For parents school meals represent outstanding value for money where else could you get a hot two course meal for such a price?  It cuts out the worry and effort of providing a packed lunch and allows the children to make an active choice in their food instead of sticking to a narrow range of “old favourites”.  No need to be constantly thinking about how to provide a decent packed lunch and of course no washing up afterwards!

As parents we all want our children to know about healthy eating and to eat food that will benefit their growth and development.  School is about learning and school meals are about learning to eat well and eat properly – all at a bargain cost too!

Children joining us for lunch will:

  • Benefit from eating with others
  • Enjoy relaxing with their friends
  • Develop tastes for different foods
  • Have the confidence to make choices
  • Take part in fun initiatives that encourage children to think about diet & lifestyles.

So check Dolphi's daily menu board in your school today or see the weekly menus on this Website.  The standard service in Solihull is the Multichoice system, involving choices of proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables or salad items. A selection of puddings, fresh fruit or yoghurt are readily available.

Our market research with parents and children shows that you want us to do more to promote and educate pupils about healthy eating, so we are constantly reviewing our menus and sourcing foods which are beneficial to a good healthy diet. We work hard with our suppliers to make sure all the ingredients are top quality with no harmful additives.

Dolphi, our cartoon style character, encourages pupils to try different foods and each day recommends the meal of the day.

School lunches are great value for money, especially when you compare the costs of a packed lunch such as the ingredients and as part of the time consideration, clearing/washing up.

If you are entitled to family benefits your child might be entitled to a free meal each day.  Ask your School Secretary for more information.
