Deano and his gang, the Dinermites always eat lots of different foods because it keeps them healthy and strong. Deano says they have cereal everyday at breakfast and then eat lots of fruit and vegetables through the day so that they have energy to concentrate in lessons and play out.

Here are some healthy food tips from Brian the Brachiosaur:

Brian's Balanced Diet
Brian the Brachiosaur says "A balanced diet helps us to stay healthy and happy!" A balanced diet means we eat the right amount of the right foods. To do this we need to eat lots of different foods. Click on the ‘Balance of Good Health’ picture and move your mouse over it to see how much of each food group you should eat.

A balanced diet is made up of 5 food groups, which are:

  1. Fruit and Vegetables
This group includes over a 100 types for you to try - fresh, frozen, canned, dried and juices of fruits and vegetables. They help keep us healthy now and when we get older. Fruit and vegetables are very low in fat, so are a good snack to eat to help us stay at a healthy weight. We should eat or drink 5 of these every day, both at mealtimes and as snacks.
  2. Bread, Cereals and Potatoes
This food group includes pasta, rice, noodles, crackers, potatoes, bread and breakfast cereals. These foods are the main source of carbohydrate, which is the healthiest source of energy. This is why it is important to eat lots of these foods throughout the day by including them in every meal.
  3. Milk and Dairy Products
This group mainly contains milk, cheese, yoghurt, cottage cheese, milk shakes, fromage frais, soft cheese and cheese triangles. We should try and eat 3 servings of these a day. A pot of yoghurt, a glass of milk or a small piece of cheese counts as a serving and will help keep your teeth and bones healthy.
  4. Meats, Fish and Alternatives
This group contains meat, fish and foods like eggs, lentils, pulses, nuts and beans. They provide lots of protein, iron and some other minerals and vitamins. Some oily fish such as mackerel contain very healthy fat that helps look after your heart.
  5. Fatty and Sugary Foods
This group includes foods like butter, margarine, cream, chocolate, biscuits, cakes, sweets, crisps, squashes and fizzy drinks. They give you lots of energy (calories) but very few nutrients so it is important not to eat too many of these foods. It is fine to have them as a treat.

Rex's Reasons to Keep Fit
As well as eating healthy foods Rex makes sure he does lots of exercise, it is so much fun! Rex says, he likes to keep fit because it helps him to:

  • look after his body
  • keep himself healthy
  • enjoy life
  • have fun with his friends
  • become strong and active
  • have energy for working hard at school
