My Child suffers from a nut allergy. Are the school meals nut free?

We’re pleased to tell you we follow a NUT FREE policy in all our primary schools. Our menu is based largely on freshly prepared dishes, and manufactured items are kept to a minimum. However, we cannot guarantee all of the products we use come from a nut free environment.

My child has an allergy to dairy products, but I would like him to have school meals. Is this possible?

Yes. We can provide meals to suit various allergies and diets, including dairy free, gluten free, egg free. We ask that you fill out a special diets form, which is available from the school office. It then needs to be signed by a doctor or dietician. Once it has been submitted, the child’s specific needs and meal provision can be discussed.

I think I might qualify for free school meals, but don’t know who to ask. What do I do?

No problem. You will need to contact the school, who will be able to help you and tell you if you are eligible for free school meals.

How do I know what my child will be eating for lunch?

The majority of schools display the weekly/daily menu in the dining hall or in reception. In addition you should have received a menu leaflet, which details the menu for the forthcoming terms. Also you can download and print the menus from this website.

I’m concerned about the quality of the meat that’s used in school meals. Can you tell me more?

All of our chicken dishes are made from quality cuts of meat, which are sourced from the EU. We do not use any meat, which has been mechanically recovered, in any of our dishes.

Your menu leaflet says dishes are homemade. What does that mean?

The term homemade refers to dishes that are freshly prepared and cooked in School kitchens, in a similar way to domestic recipes. These meals are made from scratch and use fresh ingredients. We acknowledge that a few kitchens have limited facilities and may not be able to prduce all the homemade dishes. This is highlighted on the menu leaflet.

How much does a school meal cost?

Across Surrey, in all Primary Schools, meals cost £1.70 per day as from September 2007.

The meal served in my child's school aren't in the same order as those on the menu leaflet? Why is that?

On the whole schools do adhere to the published menus, however in some schools it is necessary to change the menu to suit local needs, such as delivery days. In addition, some schools elect to have their Roast days on the same day each week, which does lead to a menu change. On rare occasions the menu may be changed due to incorrect or non-delivery of items needed for the menu. Where there is a regular change in the menu, the correct menu should be available to view in your school.
