Your Questions Answered
Picture of a question mark.

Every month we receive a number of questions from you regarding school menus, the website and other aspects of the service.  Every query, comment or complaint we receive is answered individually.  Each month we will select some of the best, most interesting or even the most controversial questions and present them here along with our responses.

What is included in the Government's new package of food standards for schools?

In May 2006 the Government announced new standards for school food - these tough standards are law so it has to happen.  A series of interim food-based standards for school lunches were introduced in September 2006, food-based standards for school food other than lunch were introduced in September 2007 and the full precise nutrient-based standards and new food-based standards will be implemented in Primary schools by September 2008 at the latest and in Secondary schools by September 2009 at the latest.

You can download a guide to the new standards here: http://www.myschoollunch.co.uk/telford/files/general/foodstandards.pdf

Can I receive a report of what my child has eaten?

If you would like to receive regular email reports of what your child has eaten please give your email address to the cook at your child's school.  Unfortunately, although we are able to answer general queries about the cashless system, we are not able to access any account information from our central office, all individual account information is managed at a school level.

For more information on the cashless system, download our handy guide here: http://www.myschoollunch.co.uk/telford/files/general/Cashless.PDF

Why are you still serving pizza and chips?

The new government regulations for school meals permit two deep-fried foods per week, however the only food we fry is our low fat chips which are served just once a fortnight in most schools.

Cheese & Tomato Pizza is also included on the menu and is served just once a fortnight at most schools.  Our pizzas have a 25% wholemeal base and the topping, which is freshly made in the school kitchen, contains peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots and a variety of other vegetables in addition to the cheese and tomato.  It is served with a selection of vegetables and carbohydrates and a variety of freshly prepared salads ensuring that children receive a balance of protein, carbohydrate, dairy, fibre, essential vitamins and minerals and at least two of their "five-a-day" vegetables.

When they are prepared appropriately and form part of an overall balanced fortnightly menu we believe that these foods are a healthy and enjoyable treat for the children.
