The School Nutrition Award for Tower Hamlets has entered its fourth year. It was developed by Education Contract Services (the in-house school meal providers of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets Council) and the Community Dietitian (part of Bart’s and the London NHS Trust Nutrition and Dietetics Department).
The award has been gaining increasing recognition within the primary and secondary schools in Tower Hamlets since it was started as well as a feature in a national association journal.
The award recognises the ‘whole school approach’ to food and nutrition issues within the local schools, providing recognition to the individual school catering service and nutrition-related activities e.g. breakfast clubs, tuck shops, water provision, organised within the school. Each site that gets assessed will be reassessed every 2 years to make sure the high standards are retained.
This year there were 8 reassessments from 2 years ago and 10 new entrants.
The school commented how pleased they were with the meals being produced in the school when we visited. Their team leader said of them -
"Mary and her team have truly represented the organisation as front line staff and produced healthy meals for the pupils achieving the highest standards possible."
The school is working with the school kitchen to encourage healthy eating and lifestyles.
Judges found that the overall service at Canon Barnett Primary School was excellent with also first class support from the school itself and this has led to Mary Agbakwue and her team winning the Bronze award.
Mary Agbakwue can be seen receiving her trophy and certificate from Michael Hales, Head of Education Contract Services, Caroline Rowlands, Community Dietitian, and Penny Tapper, Public Health Advisor at Education Contract Services' Annual Staff Focus Day on 21st July 2006 at The Museum of London in the Docklands.
