St George’s day lunchtime treats for Tower Hamlets kids
Date: 24/4/2008

East End schoolchildren marked St George’s Day by tucking into some good old traditional English grub this week.

Fish ‘n’ chips, shepherd’s pie and more of the country’s favourite dishes were on offer to hungry students in Tower Hamlets’ schools on Wednesday 23rd April.  Serving areas and canteens were decked out in St George’s crosses, as local school children enjoyed a real festival atmosphere during their lunch hour.

As well as the tasty dishes being served, the children also took part in activities and quizzes based on England. A DVD player, portable CD players and fold-up scooters were the borough-wide prizes up for grabs as Tower Hamlets youngsters celebrated St George’s Day in style.

The themed lunch was organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Contract Services team, who provide lunches to nearly all of the borough’s schools.

Michael Hales, Head of Children’s Services Contract Services at Tower Hamlets Council said:

“The children really enjoy the themed lunches and they are a great way of celebrating different cultures and backgrounds. The menu we put together for St George’s Day included some really traditional English meals, and the children seemed to love them.”

Contract Services arrange regular themed lunches throughout the year to enable Tower Hamlets children the chance to try new foods and learn about different cultures. The team has recently organised Turkish and Spanish themed lunches in schools, and all meals provided by the team meet the government’s nutritional guidelines for school meals.
