Celebrating St George’s in the East End
Date: 28/4/2009

East End school children marked St George’s Day by tucking into some good old traditional English grub this week.

Fish ‘n’ chips, Meat pie and more of the country’s favourite dishes were on offer to hungry students in Tower Hamlets’ schools on Thursday 24th April.  Serving areas and canteens were decked out in St George’s crosses, as local school children enjoyed a real festival atmosphere during their lunch break.

As well as the tasty dishes being served, the children also took part in activities and quizzes based on England. 5 fold-up scooters were the borough-wide prizes up for grabs as Tower Hamlets youngsters celebrated St George’s Day in style.

The themed lunch was organised by Tower Hamlets Council’s Contract Services team, who provide lunches to nearly all of the borough’s schools.

Michael Hales, Head of Children’s Services Contract Services at Tower Hamlets Council said:

“The children really enjoy the themed lunches that we create. The menu we put together for St George’s Day included some really traditional English meals, and the children seemed to love them.”

Contract Services arrange regular themed lunches throughout the year to enable Tower Hamlets children the chance to try new foods and learn about different cultures. The team will be organising a taste the States and The Flavour of Asia themed lunches in the near future.
